Story 4

I was one of the lucky ones that got to help out. It was wondeful to see our church family so polarized, so loving, so non-judgemental and so available. (It helped that most businesses were out of power - my office was out and so I was able to come!)

I met a lady who runs a shelter in Sand Springs that houses handicapped youth. God's love shined so brightly through her! She was looking for a movie to take them to at a dollar theater. I offered her $ but she refused. She was able to shuffle funds to make it happen. What lucky teens to be in her loving care - yet she was thanking me profusely for the privilege of a place to stay. DHS forbids sheltering youth in a place that doesn't have electricity and she came to Asbury with her charges to abide by the law.

I met a crippled little man who wanted a wheelchair to help get his wife to the car. He explained that she has MS. I asked where she was and he proudly pointed in her direction, "See the beautiful blonde - she's mine!" What a guy - he and his sweet little wife thanked me no fewer than a thousand times.

I was able to help one disabled lady to the bathroom. She was afraid that her sister wasn't coming back for her. I got to listen to her fears and just sit with her for a while.

Lost kids, smells that our church has never experienced before, cots everywhere (people sleeping under the stairwells even - good place!), fear, anxiety, disabilities and smiles as wide as faces could hold. What a privilege -- I will get there sooner next time!
